Experimental approach to ommunity participation in rural primary health care

Abstract
BACKGROUND:
@EN community participation is one of the most important factor for successful primary health care services. But it is hard to achieve.
@ES METHOD:
@EN community based primary health care (PHC) programs were implemented in a rural asa of Yeoju Kun by Korea University (KU) from 1982 to 1992. Several operational researches had been carried out. Factors related to the community participation
sorted
out and discussed.
@ES RESULTS:
@EN 1. One village health worker (VHW) covered 55 households of 248 persons on the average. The most important task of her was found to be keeping health information data especially for biostatistics in relation to the risk groups of resident
people.
2. In order to continue VHWs' activities after the termination of the project, a considerable amount of fund was accumulated by the VHWQs. It provided the minimum budget for transportation, luncheon, soft drinks, and others after the cessation
of
K. U.
supports. It was clarified that without the above budget, community participation since after would not be continued in rural area of Yeoju for PHC activities.
3. PHC services were influenced with basic education of PHC workers concerning prevailing health problems. It was revealed to be the principal step of establishment. The category of workers to be educated included at least physicians as public
doctor.,
nurses as PHC practitioner, and VHWs as PHC leader n the situation of rural Korea.
4. It was also clarified that the private university hospital was potentially able to be participated in PHC if mutual benefits of hospital and community be existed, especially in case of referral system even under the national insurance system
of
Korea.
5. Among some specially designed service programs other than routine basic health services, out-standing results of people's participation was found in physical check-up for mass screening.
@ES CONCLUSION:
@EN Some factors related to community participation in Yeoju Kun area PHC program by KU from 1987 to 1992 were listed. Training village health workers and maintaining their organization, fund accumulation, special programs, organizational
coordination,
on the job training program, and patient referral systems were discussed.
